Ways to open a debate

Introduction

  • Thank you for being here with us today.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure/ honour to welcome you…

Presenting the teamline:

  • We as todays proposition/opposition have structured our case as follows:
  • I, as the first speaker, will be talking about ...
  • Our second speaker, ..., will elaborate the argumentation about …on the fact that ...
  • And our third speaker, ..., will do the rebuttal.
  • We would like to persuade you that…
  • What we want to achieve in the future is…
  • In order to effectively debate this topic, we, as the affirmative team, would like to propose that….

Definitions & Criteria

  • As the proposition, we would like to begin with defining the following….
  • To set the framework for our motion, we believe it is necessary to propose the following definitions….
  • We would like to introduce our stand by giving the following definitions. …
  • We, the proposition, will elaborate one of the most striking features/criteria of this problem, namely…
  • We define… as…
  • The criterion/criteria of our discussion is/are …
  • Now we as today's proposition/opposition strongly believe that …………..  is true/not true, but before we come to our actual argumentation, let us first define some important terms in this debate.
  • We believe that what is meant by ... is... / that ... are ...
  • When we say ... should ... we mean that ...

Claiming arguments

  • There are two/three main arguments which support my position/claim. The first thing we have to consider/ understand is that …
  • One of the arguments / Another argument in favour of/ against the resolution… is that…
  • In the first place we would like to make clear that….
  • There is no doubt that…

Supporting arguments of the previous speakers

  • As our 1st/2nd /3rd speaker explained in his/her speech, …
  • I would like to add…
  • I‘d like to support the points brought by X.

Importance: markers

  • The core of the argument is that …
  • I ought to stress that …
  • It has to be underlined/understood that …

Giving examples:

  • There are many examples for this/for ..., for instance.
  • In fact, you can find many examples for this in real life. Just think of...
  • And there are similar cases, such as ..., ...
  • So in this simple example we can clearly see the effect of ...

Rebutting arguments, rebuilding your case:

  • But before I come to my own arguments, let us first have a look at what ... has said.
  • I will continue our case in a minute, but before that there are some things about the ... speech that need to be addressed.
  • The first prop/opposition speaker has told us ...; on the contrary ...
  • He/She also said that ...; but in fact…
  • He/She was claiming that ...; but as my first speaker already told you, ...
  • The affirmatives/ negatives are mistaken in saying that…
  • The negatives/affirmatives are contradicting themselves by firstly claiming that… and secondly agreeing with us during the cross-questions (X-Q) that…
  • Even if we agreed with the affirmatives/negatives. that… , there is still a problem of…
  • The affirmatives/negatives may be right that … but their claims about… are based on false evidence.
  • I (dis)agree with SP when he says that… (I am convinced that… / Anybody can see that…)
  • There is little doubt that…
  • I am in complete (dis)agreement with SP as you can‘t deny that…
  • The example/argument about… is irrelevant because…

Asking questions

  • Wouldn't you have to agree ...? /
  • Doesn't what you're saying contradict with ...? /
  • What about the ...? /
  • How would you explain, that ... ?
  • Could you specify what you mean by... ?
  • Could you please define… for me?
  • If it is not a personal question…
  • Could you repeat/explain/ give reasoning for …
  • Could you please quote your source?
  • Begging your pardon, did you really mean that…
  • Isn‘t this in contradiction to... ?
  • Could you stick to the point/subject, please?
  • Are you overlooking the fact that… ?
  • If you could say a word about…

Answering

  • You seem to be forgetting…
  • That‘s absurd/ridiculous
  • That‘s beside the point.
  • It depends on what you mean/understand by…
  • I ought to stress that …
  • It has to be underlined/understood that …
  • The core of the argument is that …
  • Let me phrase/formulate/express it this way …

Agreeing / Disagreeing

  • I entirely/completely agree that/with his views on … However, the other side of the coin is that …,
  • I am in complete agreement with I would agree with him in principle, but …
  • I completely disagree with him on this point
  • I am in total disagreement with …
  • (Regretfully), I am unable to accept his
  • Shouldn’t we consider…
  • But what about …
  • Frankly, I doubt if…
  • The truth of the matter is…
  • The problem with your point of view is that…

How to convince in a debate

  • The opposition have tried to make some good points, however, they forgot to think about some very important issues, namely….
  • We hear what the opposition are saying but we do not agree. We will prove to you…
  • That’s one way to think about it, however,….
  • Not to play the Devil’s Advocate, but we will prove to you exactly the opposite.
  • The proposition’s motion may seem plausible at first glance, however, we as the opposition, would like to remind you of recent developments in this area. According to ….
  • At first sight, the proposition’s argument seems to be true. But….
  • We have thought about the affirmative team’s proposal, however, research findings strongly support our motion of…..
  • The proposition unfortunately failed to reveal the truth of the matter,….
  • It is easy enough to make broad generalisation about...like the opposition just did, but in reality it is a very complex issue.
  • The arguments presented by the proposition are by no means sufficient enough to back up the claim that….
  • It is generally excepted these days that….
  • It is only a matter of time until it will become evident that the opposition’s stand must fall due to the following reasons….
  • One must take into account that….

 

Summarizing & ending your speech:

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome for the last time from today's prop/opposition. It is now my pleasure to summarize this debate, take a look at what both sides have said and see what the outcome of this debate actually is.
  • A first/second/... major clash was: ...
  • Today's prop/opposition told us ...; we had to find ...
  • So Ladies and Gentlemen, what have I told you today? Firstly ..., Secondly..
  • As a final word, there were (three) important clashes in the debate: ...
  • Throughout this discussion, what we’ve demonstrated is that …
  • Although (+ proposition), Despite/ in spite of (+ nom),
  • It is certainly true that …, but I wonder whether/if …
  • It cannot be denied that …but it remains to be seen whether …
  • To summarize what I‘ve just said…
  • Why not conclude with the following note …
  • In conclusion, … And for all of these reasons, the motion must stand/fall.

 

 

Possible conclusions

  • This motion must fall because….
  • To conclude, we must emphasise our motion of…., hence the opposition’s point of view can no longer be supported.
  • To sum up, our motion must stand, simply because during the debate we have shown….
  • This debate has made obvious that the opposition’s motion cannot stand since…..
  • The simple truth is…
  • The proposed arguments lead us to the irrefutable conclusion that…
  • To draw a line under this debate, …
  • After careful consideration, we must conclude that….
