Travelling. Tourism: a Blessing or Curse

Comment on the following statement:

"In recent years tourism has really taken off. However, many people think that tourism ruins everything that it touches.”

What can you say for and against tourism?

Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

write an introduction (state the problem)
give arguments "for”
give arguments "against”
draw a conclusion based on the given arguments

It goes without saying that tourism can have both positive and negative effects on an area. In many cases the positive effect will be obvious.

On the one hand, there are many things to be said in favour of tourism. First of all, tourism is very beneficial as it provides people with jobs and brings substantial profit for the country’s economy. It means that cash, which most inhabitants will be happy to take advantage of, flows in the area. In addition to this, the country can improve living conditions for its citizens because most of the money from tourism is spent on schools, roads, cultural development and maintenance of architectural sights, which otherwise would be in a sorry state. What is more, tourism brings cultures and people closer since travelling is a part of people’s education and it is a good way to broaden our minds. Communicating can bring local inhabitants some benefits such as knowledge about lifestyle of other people that they might not have the chance to see as well as tourists are shown the way other people live.

On the other hand, we must admit that tourism does have some disadvantages. To begin with, some people say, that the onset of tourism may have dramatic effects upon the local community as towns are losing their character and becoming overdeveloped and crowded as well as expensive. Besides, many ancient monuments are being destroyed by unstopped march of tourism. Consequently, the cities are polluted and litter has become a major problem too. To make things worse, the historic centres of many great European cities, such as London or Rome, are fast becoming occupied by tourists with clicking cameras and left by all locals residents except for the souvenir sellers. Another argument against is that sometimes people have no interest in the culture of the place they are visiting and, as a result, it becomes almost like a "home from home”. For example, restaurants cook for tourists their native food instead of local cuisine. Therefore, it affects the lifestyle of local citizens, change their environment can destroy any character the area may have, and the area may lose part of its valuable culture forever.

To sum up, although some people think that the price for tourism is too high, it can bring economic gain to the development of all countries. We should just minimize our environmental impact, respect local cultures and human rights as well as get knowledge and understanding.
